This was created on a Mac IIcx with Adobe Illustrator 88. It was drawn directly from my hand. I perched my hand on blocks to support it in the same position each time, and simply drew what I saw directly into Illustrator.
Obviously, Illustrator had far fewer features in those days, and the computer was excruciatingly slow, so that every time I previewed (you could only draw in outline mode — preview wasn't dynamic) it took an age to build the picture up on screen, element by element. The more complex the picture became, the more time it would take each time.
This was created before the first time I ever used a graphics tablet — I used a mouse to create this (which would rightly be considered insane nowadays).
